HEALTHY FAMILIES BEGIN WITH CONVERSATIONS

By Adveline J Minja | Nurture Forward Foundation (NFF) | Sunday, September 13th, 2026

Some of the most important health education does not begin in a hospital or clinic.

Most important health education begins at home.

This week, UNESCO highlighted an initiative in Zanzibar that began five years ago in six Shehias and has now developed into a nationally endorsed Parent-Child Communication Toolkit supporting conversations between parents, guardians and young people about sexual and reproductive health, healthy relationships, informed choices, risks and seeking help.

There is an important lesson here that extends beyond any single health topic: Families are learning environments.

Children learn from what families explain. They also learn from what adults practice.

Conversations about hygiene, nutrition, personal care, emotional wellbeing, body changes, relationships, safety and when to seek help can shape behaviors children carry into adolescence and adulthood.

Yet some of the conversations children need most are often the ones families find most difficult to begin.

Parenting education is therefore not simply about correcting children’s behavior.

It is also about giving parents and caregivers the knowledge, confidence and communication skills to guide children through different stages of growth and development.

Schools and health professionals have essential roles. Communities too do have their resonsibility.

But the family remains one of the most influential learning environments in a child’s life.

NFF Sunday Reflection: What important conversation does your child need to have with you—not someday, but now?
